Work is furiously progressing on the Blaney Street pier, in order to have it ready for duty tomorrow AM.

It looks like the ferry will run tomorrow. Area residents just received the following email and phone call from the city.
6/10/2011 1:59:49 PM EST - This is the City of Salem emailing you to advise you that striping of the Blaney St. parking lot will take place this evening beginning at 10:00 pm. This work will take 4 to 6 hours. The contractor has been asked to keep trucks away from the residences as much as possible and to keep the noise level to a minimum. The Blaney Street parking lot will re-open tomorrow morning for the operation of the Salem Ferry and for off-street parking for neighborhood residents. Delivery of a pre-fabricated building to serve as a terminal building is expected to be delivered next week. Residents may be asked to move their cars at that time. Thank you for your patience as we complete this phase of the project.
While this will be paved and painted, there is still a decent pile of unfinished work. Note the very large pile of boulders in the last picture. Those are destined for removal or placement in specific spots on the site. A new building needs to be placed. There are numerous areas, like where the boulders are, that still have exposed drain edges. The railing has not been installed, and the posts for it are not set.
It won't be a quiet night in this neighborhood, but if this is the end of our houses shaking all day every day, so be it. Well, until next summer's phase.
We owe you a debt of gratitude, G. Were it not for your constant vigilance, updates, photos and badgering, I have no doubt the ferry's first day of operation would have been on Sunday instead of Saturday.

LOL. I don't expect that I had any impact on the timeframe of the project at all. I'm impressed with the speed with which they completed this enough to get the ferry running. I overdocumented this because I live with it every day.
ReplyDeleteI bumped into the mayor this morning at the house directly abutting the pier. She was very gracious and sympathetic in apologizing for the inconveniences. She was also gracious about the ribbing I've given her here.
The one thing I attribute to this blog is that the day after I wrote about that foul mouthed gent, that residence stopped being a parking lot and changing area for the workers.
